Many vehicles have been born from partnerships in recent years, but I firmly believe the Mitsubishi Outlander stands among the very best of its kind. The Japanese automaker's SUV shares numerous components with the Nissan Rogue, yet Mitsubishi has managed to preserve the model's core identity. The result is a reliable, capable, and fuel-efficient SUV that delivers excellent value for money.

The Mitsubishi Outlander benefits from a wide range of updates for 2026, including a new battery for the PHEV version, which significantly increases its average all-electric driving range. The gasoline-powered version also receives a new 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, replacing the previous 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit.

Trim Levels and Pricing

For 2026, the Mitsubishi Outlander lineup is offered in six trim levels for the gasoline version. Pricing ranges from $36,398 to $48,398, making it one of the most affordable models in its segment. And don't assume it offers less because of that—quite the opposite, in fact.

Unfortunately, pricing for the 2026 Outlander PHEV has not yet been announced at the time of writing. However, we can expect figures very similar to the 2025 model year, with prices ranging from $48,698 for the base version up to $60,598 for the top trim.

Category and Competition

Competition is particularly fierce in the compact SUV segment. Fortunately, the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander has several strong arguments in its favor. First, it is one of the only vehicles in its class to offer seating for seven passengers. Its PHEV variant remains a true benchmark, and the model as a whole is both elegant and imposing.

In short, Mitsubishi has done an impressive job with its SUV, whose popularity has been soaring since the arrival of the current generation.

Rivals: Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Bronco Sport, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-5, Mazda CX-50, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan

Design and Technology

While many compact SUVs on the market could be described as having anonymous styling, the opposite is true of the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander, which clearly stands out from the crowd. The Japanese automaker's SUV has a strong road presence, thanks to its muscular design and refined elegance. It's a vehicle that turns heads wherever it goes.

Inside, the Outlander's cabin is spacious, comfortable, and above all, well thought out. It has everything needed to appeal to the whole family. Ergonomics are well executed, and controls are easy to find. The only real criticism is the mediocre quality of certain interior plastics.

Even in base form, the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander offers a generous level of equipment. It comes standard with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and an eight-speaker Yamaha audio system, not to mention wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which are also part of the standard feature list.

Performance

One of the biggest updates for the 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander lies under the hood, with the arrival of a new 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This compact powerplant produces 174 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque. A CVT transmission remains standard, as does the brand's legendary all-wheel-drive system.

Mitsubishi claims an average fuel consumption of 8.7 L/100 km for this new engine, which is even lower than the previous 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit.

The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander is also available as a plug-in hybrid, which has received a significant update for the new model year. It combines a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, delivering a total output of 248 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. A CVT and all-wheel drive are also standard here.

What makes this PHEV version particularly appealing is its 22.7-kWh battery pack, which allows it to store enough energy to deliver an average electric driving range of more than 75 kilometres on a full charge.

Weak Points

Some interior materials fall short in terms of perceived quality. Pricing climbs quickly as you move up the trim ladder.

Strong Points

A versatile, reliable, and very enjoyable vehicle to drive. Its design is inspiring and attracts attention. Mitsubishi also offers excellent color and wheel combinations.

Signature Element

The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander delivers an excellent value-for-money proposition.

Final Word

Mitsubishi may not offer as many models as some of its competitors, but every vehicle in its lineup has what it takes to appeal to buyers. The Outlander is popular—and for good reason. The model has been significantly refined over the past few years. In short, it's an excellent choice.
